Google Fiber

Google is not just a company anymore, at least not for those people who love internet. It has metamorphosed into the biggest daddy of the internet realm in the last few years. With an annual revenue of $37.90 billion and super high development rate, Google has become the reason for the owners of silicon valley giants like Microsoft to lose sleep at nights. Just when we think what new could Google bring, it comes up with a whole new type of product or service and leaves the people in Google-awe.

“Google fiber” is yet another masterpiece of internet technology which has been launched by Google recently. It is a type of internet connection service which would provide you 100 times faster internet speed in contrast to the conventional internet connections. In the Kansas City, Missouri and various other places which are located nearby, the service has been launched already. According to the Google executives, the installations would begin this September.

Download a movie in few seconds?

Google fiber aims at proving ultra high speed connections to internet users thereby enabling them to watch live channels on their computers and laptops. If “How much high speed?” is your question then “one movie per second” would be the answer. Yes sir, you read it right!. Google fiber will provide you an internet speed of whopping 1000 MB or 1 GB per second! With the help of it you would be able to watch and record your favourite TV shows just like the way you would do with TVs.

Download the movies in seconds

What’s inside the box?

With the Google fiber service you will be able to browse through more than 100 different TV channels including NBC, CNN, Star World etc for a monthly price of $120. Additionally, you will also get a whole terabyte of cloud storage. That’s a lot of space to store all your movies, eh!

If you are not much into TV shows and prefer spending time with the wonderful world wide web instead then there is an internet-only pack for you as well. This package is priced at $70 per month. The speed will be the same but you won’t be granted access to the internet TV channels.

The initial installation fee though, is depressing and a mood-killer which is $300. “One must consider it as a home improvement cost” the Google executives said. Really?? My first reaction was “C’mon man! I would rather buy my own personal beer fountain with this much dough.”

However, on a second thought, I felt investing in such amazing technology actually won’t be a bad idea. I mean, when the few MB/second speed could be so amazing then imagine what this GB/second internet speed could open up for us? We would be able to make infinite long distance buffer-free video calls, upload thousands of our priceless images in a jiffy and well, catch our favourite shows while working on our computers. And besides, this is just one time investment after all.

Wait! Don’t get too excited

Just when you are convinced of paying the high fees for the installation (which is whopping $300 – I still can’t get over this) they throw in some limitations for you. Well, for the starters you must be resident of Kansas City or the nearby areas (at least until Google Fiber expands its coverage). Secondly, it is required that a minimum of your 50 neighbours must be willing to register for this service.

So, the million dollar question is “Is the wait for the arrival of this service in your city, paying $300 bucks for installation fee and convincing your 50 grumpy neighbours worth it?”.

Would you jump to get Google Fiber immediately or would you rather wait? I would love to know about it. Post your comment below to let me know what you think about it.

  1. I guess I’ll just wait because I read somewhere, good things happen to those who wait ;-) On a serious note, $300 does sound a little too steep but then getting 50 neighbors to agree to this seems more difficult.
